Founded in the mid-1990s, Asianet Communications was promoted by Dr Raji Menon. By late 2006, Dr Menon had partially pulled out of the organization and turned over control to Jupiter Entertainment Ventures. In November 2008, Star India purchased a 51% stake in Asianet Communications and formed a joint venture with JEV. By 2014, Star India had fully acquired Asianet Communications. Previously, the media company was operated by Dr Raji Menon and its subsidiaries.
Asianet was first incorporated in 1991 as a private limited company in Delhi. It was renamed Asianet Communications Limited on December 3, 1997, and on January 15, 2000. In 2011, Asianet was sold to Asianet TV Holdings Pvt. Ltd, which is owned by Jupiter Entertainment Ventures Private Limited and Jupiter Capitals Ltd. The company is currently run by Rajeev Chandrasekhar. The company is headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

Plans offer up to 200 Mbps download speeds, unlimited data consumption, and an industry-standard fair usage policy. Typically, there is a one-time non-refundable activation fee for each plan, which can be waived by paying the first month’s rent six to twelve months ahead of time. By paying a year in advance, the customer will avoid the activation fee.
